Photobucket: automated end-to-end tests to speed up feature releases

Photobucket wanted to accelerate feature releases and get the test coverage it needed across the code base. We added Cypress testers and a project manager to its team.

Under 10 minutesfor a full run of 80 end-to-end test suites

  • Cypress
  • GraphQL
  • Page Objects
  • CI/CD

The situation

  • Photobucket needed test coverage across the code base to release features faster.
  • Its Cypress tests ran slowly, even after optimization.
  • GraphQL calls in the NEXT app returned a boolean instead of the mutated data.

What we did

Cypress test suite

We built a Cypress end-to-end suite for the NEXT app with programmatic login, page objects and the Arrange-Act-Assert structure.

Environment-agnostic tests

We made the configuration environment-agnostic and added fixtures for each environment and plan tier.

GraphQL fix

We added a GraphQL expert, and the back end now returns mutated data.

Process and handover

We wrote a test plan, test scripts, testing process documents, a CI/CD time-limit analysis and a knowledge transfer document.

The result

  • The end-to-end suite reached 37 spec files and 80 test suites.
  • A full run took under 10 minutes.
  • GraphQL mutations now return mutated data instead of a boolean.
